Periodontal disease affects the teeth and gums, and is usually caused by a build up of plaque and tartar for long periods of time. Eventually this can cause redness or swelling in the gums, and erodes the supporting tissue around teeth. If left untreated, this can lead to loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.
The early stages of periodontal disease are usually painless, so it can be overlooked without regular dental checkups. In fact, four out of five people in the U.S. have some form of gum disease (WebMD.com).
Many studies have indicated the correlation between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. One in office treatment involves the use of an antibiotic delivered directly into the space between tooth and gum where severe periodontal disease needs to be treated. The area is cleaned and irrigated before the antibiotic is administered. The protocol for using this method can be discussed with your dentist and dental hygienist. Our Registered Dental Hygienists (RDHs) are trained to administer the treatment in conjunction with
the dentist’s diagnosis. Therapy can be repeated in areas of your gums that are infected, and referral to a periodontist will be made, if indicated.
