FAMILY GENERAL DENTISTRY

Any licensed dentist who has met the qualifications of the state they are practicingin andobtained a license through their state dental board qualifies to practice general dentistry. Most dentists who have received specialized training and fulfilled the requirements of their specialty limit their practice to that specialty rather than branch off into general dentistry. Of course, they also have the option of practicing general family dentistry if they do not limit their practice.  A general dentist cannot declare himself a specialist, but may limit his practice to an area that he has expertise in. Sometimes a physical ailment may limit the scope of a dentist's practice, and sometimes aptitude will determine their scope of practice. Whether a denstist chooses to only practice general dentistry decides to offer cosmetic dentistry or implant dentistry, it is our obligation to make sure the services we provide are done at the standard of care for that particular service.

General dentistry is the area that most dentists practice under. There is a credential that enables hospital dentists to meet the criteria of medical services as a board qualified general dentist. Fellowship and Mastership is another category used by the Academy of General Dentistry to designate levels of accomplishment in continuing education. Family general dentistry is a term used by general dentist to indicate that they accommodate all family members and will treat pediatric and well as older patients. Sometimes "family general dentistry" is used to indicate to the public that all family members are welcome.
